On October 31, 1871, the citizens of Sutton bore witness to an event that would change this small town's fate: the inauguration of the South Eastern Counties Junction Railway; the first railway to go through Sutton.

The 19th century saw the advent of the railway and now this new means of transportation would slowly change the Sutton citizens' way of life. Over the next 100 years the train's whistle would set the tone for people's day-to-day activities as well as the entire region's economic growth.
