The SHALOM SINGERS

During 1973 members from the youth group formed the Shalom Singers. The 25 to 30 members of the group came from 3 local churches. At first the group conducted musical services in their home churches but soon were going to other churches across Prince Edward Island. The reputation of the Shalom Singers grew and they were invited to churches in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Typically they conducted the complete praise and worship service that included singing, poems, personal testimonies and prayer. In 1976 the group sang for the television program "Reach For the Top" which was taped at the Souris High School. They continued this music ministry until the fall of 1979.

Baptismal tank is behind the arched opening to the left of the pulpit (note the water scene).

Although a baptismal tank had been installed in the church there remains an attraction to the way baptismal services had been observed in the past. During July 1976 Rev. Arthur Willis conducted a baptismal service on the beach. This area of Prince Edward Island is blessed with many sandy beaches so it was not hard to find a suitable area. The baptism service is usually set for a time of day and month when the tide is high. Deep water near the shoreline does not require the pastor and candidate for baptism to go very far form the shore line to find sufficient water to immerse the candidate for baptism. Then people witnessing the baptism can easily hear the words of commitment from the one being baptized. On the July 1976 occasion the Shalom Singers provided music while 12 persons were baptized.
