"Back in the 50's, the United Church went on an aggressive policy to build churches about every 2nd block, like pubs in England, you know, everywhere down the way. There are four or five United Churches within a five minute drive of here.

Every subdivision put in a church, and we were at the peak then, I mean we had huge numbers - 500 in Sunday School. They used to be over in the school there were so many and now it's going down.

They thought immigration would remain the same, a lot of British Isles type immigration, and of course when it started to became the Italian influx and Greek and so on, they didn't find many Protestants from amongst that, as you can imagine".

-David Jackson grew up in Ontario and moved to Bendale in 1966.

"When we first organized we had about 400 families in the immediate area from just the other side of McCowan to Birkdale. Then we had more than 400 children for about a two year period then they started to dwindle off. Now of the original charter members of which there were probably about two-hundred, there are probably not more than thirty. Some have moved away, some have passed away. I would guess about right now we have about thirty possibly thirty-five of those original charter members.
But we have a lot of strong people in our church who are not charter members and if it were not for them we probably would not exist. Glen Ayr's been closed for two weeks now and everybody from three churches is going to Knob Hill. As of two weeks from now everyone will be going to Glen Ayr for three weeks and then to Church of the Master for three weeks. So we're getting to know each other. It's a good idea and it also saves money on paying a minister".

The Sisters of Misericord built the first hospital in Scarborough. In 1952 they bought twenty-five acres near the original Thomson settlement for $30,000. One of the ways the building of the hospital was funded was through the "selling of bricks". Members of the community bought the bricks that would build the hospital and in return received a paper brick to mark their contribution. The hospital opened officially on May 12, 1956.

When the hospital first opened there was no TTC service. Local firefighters volunteered to give regular service everyday to the hospital. They did this for almost two months until the dirt road we call Lawrence Avenue was improved to the TTC's satisfaction.

"The first two years the TTC had a system whereby you went to the old city limits for the first fare. Then, in this direction you could get as far as Lawrence and Brimley. If you went beyond that point it was another nickel. Of course for that period of time we had to pay three fares. Until such time as three of us got together and decided to alternate driving. We'd go down to work, we all worked downtown. We all transported ourselves down to behind the bank at Queen and Lee. For twenty-five cents all day you could park. Then we'd take the streetcar in to downtown".

-Harold Fearon

Harold worked for the TD Bank for 35 years in downtown Toronto and commuted using the TTC.
