"We bought a house on Benleigh. It's known as the Ben Jungle, and we've lived there for nineteen years. We've renovated it, and watched the community change. All the seniors have sold their homes and new families and young families are moving in, and kids are playing hockey on the street. It's kind of nice to have that little bit of a change.

When my kids were small, they had nobody to play with because our neighbours were older, more established individuals and their kids had all moved up, moved away.
It's a beautiful area. We had decided at one point that we were going to move after about five years that we were here, and I couldn't find an area that we liked as much because it is kind of woodsy and our street is very established and has big beautiful trees. It's almost like downtown Toronto without being downtown Toronto".

Maria Raeli was born in Italy and moved with her family to the Danforth Area in Toronto as a child. She married and moved to the Bendale area in the 1980s.

"So when we think of Bendale as the Bendale development, we think of the area that is specific to just east of McCowan road where the streets are all called Ben. Ben-this and Ben-that, and Ben-something-else - that was the development in the early '50s. Either 1951 or 1952 I think".
