At the top of the Chancel steps we placed a table and three candles for a special candle lighting ceremony. We honored the victims, the survivors and those who helped with the relief following the tragedy. I had earlier invited Mrs. Margaret Saint, one of the survivors, to light the candle of courage and grace and that candle was to honor all those who survived that fateful day. The second candle, I invited the MHA to light the candle of hope and faith and that was in remembrance of those who had died, who did not survive. And then, Burin Mayor, Kevin Lundrigan lit the candle for love and peace, in thanksgiving for all those who helped in the relief effort.

So immediately following the candle lighting ceremony, this time of remembrance, we had a moment of silence. The names of all those who had died, in particular those from St. Andrews congregation, those names were read and a time of silence was kept. After that Perry Pearson sang a ballad of the tidal wave.

Following the service at the memorial hall, all were invited to come back for a social hour. And really it was a time for us all to reflect together, on a, on this tragedy, on this event, with survivors, with those who had lived through it, with those who may have had relatives, those who may have had relatives who have helped in the relief efforts. So it really was not a time of celebration but a definite time of commemoration and a time of remembrance for everyone.
