This is an old shipwreck map, dating from the first decade of the 20th century.

With the growth of permanent settlement and the high loss of life and ships to the sea, the new Government of Newfoundland passed an Act of Leglislation to erect a Lighthouse at Cape Bonavista. The Act was passed on April 26th 1841, the house did not become operational until 1843.

The fishery, namely cod, has been the stay of Newfoundland for over 500 years. First prosecuted as a transient and by-boat industry, it lead to permanent settlement by Europeans in the 1600's. Traditionally measured in Quintals, it denotes a unit of salted cod.

As you can see by the graph, Newfoundland's salt fish exports increasing became a domestic produced one, no longer was the oceans rich harvest being cultivated by temporary European visitors. After 3 centuries a homegrown industry had come of age.
