The agents of transition : l'abbé Paul-Henri Carignan

In the mid 1940's, l'abbé Albert Tessier, as he himself admitted, could no longer carry out the work of propagandist and restoring family values. So, in 1946, l'abbé Paul-Henri Carignan was named Assistant Visitor Propagandist. During the 1950's, l'abbé Carignan gradually took over from Mgr Tessier as head of the pedagogical direction of the Instituts Familiaux. The latter was having more and more health problems. Under the influence of l'abbé Carignan, the students of the Instituts Familiaux were invited to join different co-operatives, such as school credit unions, controlled entirely by the students, or the ranks of the Catholic Action movements, such as the Jeunesse étudiante-catholique.

The transition : the Academic program

Between 1940 and 1950, the program of the Regional Home Economics Schools was gradually transformed. Under the initiative of Mgr Albert Tessier, the rural and agricultural aspects of the course were dropped. In addition, he added two years to the program, for a total of four years of study. Because of this additional time, new subjects such as English, Pedagogy and Psychology were added to the academic agenda.
