The decline of the Instituts familiaux

The 1960 decade is an era of extensive reforms for education in Quebec. The state replaces the Church in the administration of the schools, the Department of Public Instruction disappears in favour of a Ministry of Education, created in 1964, and the Religious personnel yield their positions to the lay people. The Instituts Familiaux do not escape this complete transformation of the Quebec school landscape. The family program cannot compete with the secondary course offered by the new composite schools as well as the technical course in domestic science offered by the Cégeps. As a result, the inscriptions continue to decrease. From 1966 on, the Instituts close their doors one after another. In 1967, the Jardin de l'Enfance, a preschool and primary school, situated until then in the downtown centre of Three-Rivers, moved its premises to l'Institut Familial Val-Marie that had just ceased its activities. In 1972, l'Institut Familial Keranna becomes l'Institut Secondaire Keranna, a private High School for young girls and accepts young boys since 1998.

A return to the beginnings at Keranna

At the time of the making of this virtual exhibit, a former student of l'Institut Familial Val-Marie, Mrs. Thérčse Durocher Trudel, went to explain her program to three classes of second year High School students at l'Institut Secondaire Keranna. The students were then able to notice the differences between their program and that of the Instituts Familiaux and to see the relationship with other events of our history in the evolution of the state of the Quebec woman.

This presentation contained a summary of the students' life and the theorectic and practical academic program such as culinary art, sewing, knitting, weaving, etc., that was learned in one of the Instituts Familiaux under the direction of the Filles de Jésus. Under her supervision, the actual students of Keranna High School experienced one way of sewing by trying to sew a button in order to notice the changes that were made in the educational program.
