By the 1850s the U.S. was rapidly growing stronger, wealthier and more confident as a nation. As a result its citizens also developed a confident attitude - they were definitely not shy. When the American summer visitors first arrived in Chester they found the local men and women industrious, skilled and hard working.
The visiting Americans brought bravado, ideas and financial resources. The more reserved locals had a no nonsense can-do attitude. Each was motivated by what they found in the other. Chesterites welcomed the American visitors, who in turn felt comfortable and 'at home'.
