The story is told of the travelling salesman who came to stay overnight at the Columbia House. During the evening the libations flowed freely and the salesman drank more than his share. In the morning he woke to find the daughter of the inn keeper beside him in the bed. According to gossip this lady was not blessed with good looks and hence had been unmarried when most women of her age had large families. The traveller learned that he had married the lady while under the influence. This was more than he could accept and he took his razor and slit his own throat rather than face the alternative. In later years it was said that his ghost appeared in the hotel and often could be heard playing sad mournful music on the organ.

In 1903 the Hackmatack Inn was built for Professor Lindley Keasby from Pennsylvania. He saw the potential for a large hotel with all the necessary comforts to cater to fellow American visitors. Taking up an entire block, the Hackmatack had an elegant ballroom, formal dining rooms, tennis courts, a private beach, and it's own yacht for use by guests. The hotel also had several cottages, rented by families during the summer. In addition, Professor Keasby had the Jib House built for his own use.
