500,000th Military Vehicle Celebration

The 500,000th military vehicle was completed, with great celebration, on June 19, 1943. Some of the attendants of the celebration included General Motors workers, Tom Murphy representing Ford, Charlie Holland representing Chrysler, and R.S. McLaughlin representing General Motors, located here in Oshawa. Some of the other attendants of the celebration included the head leaders of the 200 allied industries, government leaders, and diplomatic representatives from other Allied Nations. The industry as a whole had built equipment with enough load capacity to carry half of the population of Canada in 1943, and it was estimated that there was a truck produced for every man in Canada's armed forces. The guests were given a tour through the General Motors plant, and three representative workers were selected from the three companies to complete the assembly of the symbolic truck. Robert Sam McLaughlin can be seen in pictures tightening the final bolts on the 500,000th military vehicle.
