Digby County: A Journey Through Time

Digby County has had its share of natural calamities. The Saxby Gale, the earliest storm on record, and other much more recent disasters, have done considerable damage, destroying boats and wharves as well as seriously eroding our coastline. The Town of Digby and Digby Neck suffers whenever there is high tidal action such as occurred a couple of years ago. The town has had to shore up its waterfront several times since its founding so much so that the southern end of Water Street has disappeared. A new breakwater of huge boulders from the tiny settlement of Culloden now awaits Nature's next terrible onslaught. The Great Fire of 1899 was made considerably worse by high winds in a blinding snowstorm. After every natural and man-made distaster the residents pick up the pieces and build again.
