Digby County: A Journey Through Time

The first school in Digby was held in the homes of the pioneers. A tutor travelled from one to another every day. He left the town shortly thereafter and continued teaching in a number of different County locations. Later a different teacher operated a school out of his front room in Digby. A proper school was built in 1789. It served local needs until 1864 when an Academy took over. The present, now closed, Digby Academy opened in 1890, the third of four such institutions. St. Patrick's School was built for the adherents of the Roman Catholic Church. The Digby Regional High School and Digby Elementary have taken over the roles of the Academy and St. Patrick's.
