Remembrance and Hope

This project was identified by the executive of the Innisfail and District Historical Society because of the major impacts the major wars of the last century, namely World Wars I & II and the ‘Korean Conflict' had on the community. The project was undertaken by Kaeli Johnson, a grade ten student at Innisfail Junior Senior High School under the guidance of Dean Jorden, Bill Mackay and Robin Minion. Where there were not living people to interview the project relied heavily on articles that appeared in the local weekly newspaper, The Innisfail Province, through the periods of interest. We found that the articles that appeared during World War I told a vivid story of the efforts of the local community to support the war efforts as well as the tragedies that struck the community when a son was killed in far away Europe. We would particularly like to thank the people who told us their own stories: Stu Black, Beryl Gray, Tina Jordan, Isobel Carter, Bessie and Orville Davis and Doug Whorrall.
