The camp life alone was a study -the long low log huts where the men slept, huddled like bees in a hive, with little light and ventilation. The nationalities represented were mostly Italians and Swedes. It was not to be wondered at that rows and fights and brawls were a daily occurrence. Those in the camps near the town went in for an evening and gambled, while those in the camps too far away gambled and squabbled amongst themselves. Interesting it was too, to watch the bridges being put together; for instance I once saw a hundred-foot Howe truss bridge put together in a single place and a single day.
