Grand Bend - Our Stories, Our Voice

One of our great delights was to go out with the fishing fleet. This meant obtaining permission from Cy Green, then getting up about 5 a.m. and if the lake was at all rough donning sou'westers at the fish-house before we set out. Then away we went in a big, open power boat, past the long pier and breakwater to the fishing grounds a mile or so from shore where seine nets were strung on long piles. It took strong muscles to haul in the nets with their ton loads of sturgeon, whitefish, Pickerel and perch. After the men had lifted three or four sets of nets they would return to the fish-house where the catch was sorted, the fish gutted and packed in chipped ice for the market.
