We Remember: Gaspesian Youth Explore their Military Heritage

Here I was eating beef jerky,

In the water which was murky.

Then suddenly a Jap shot Marty.

What a shame he was a smarty.

We left our brother,

We are sad but I think about his mother.

The poor old Jap,

I wonder if he had a map.

Should have checked while we had the chance,

We got caught and they shot Lance.

There's five left and we are in a camp,

It's not good, here our beds are damp.

They won't let us eat,

But when they do there's no meat.

In the middle of Japan,

I think they just shot Dan.

I might be next,

Unless it's a test.

If things do not go my way,

I will have to give my journal away.

Hello, I am the new guy,

Here's something about me, I like pie,

Jeffery's dead,

Shot in the head.

Oh I almost forgot,

My name is Scott.

I said goodbye to my family and friends,

Who knows I might never see them again.

Just got two Japs,

Oh they had maps.

I think their names are Chong and Lee,

I let them go for their family.

Tomorrow I'm being shipped home,

Shot by a mortar, but I'm not alone.

Back across the border,

Still hurt from the mortar.

I can see my wife and kids,

Good to see my newborn did not have S.I.D.S.

On the dock,

I'm finally of the clock.

Lost count of days I have been away,

I think it's May.

My hearts full of joy,

To see my boy.
