There was a time when the parish priests / Il fut un temps où les curés
were drinkers and good fellows / Étaient buveurs et bons diables
Fond of wine and gaiety / Aimant le vin et la gaieté
Fond of game and women / Aimant le jeu et les femmes
But have we ever seen, / Mais a-t-on jamais vu
though humble and wise, / Quoique modeste et sage
such a great priest in the village / Un si grand curé dans l'village

We did not need a justice of peace / On n'avait pas besoin de juge de paix
to settle our trials and squabbles / Pour régler les procès, les chicanes
when people argued, / Quand les personnes se disputaient
under the protection of his cassock / À l'abri de sa soutane
Winners and losers / Les vainqueurs et vaincus
without a fuss submitted / Se soumettaient sans tapage
to the judgment of the village priest / À l'arrêt du curé du village

The priest had a hole pierced / Le curé fit percer un trou
in the door to the presbytery / Dans la porte de son presbytère
where all the peasants / Tous les paysans
came to drop a coin / Mettaient un sou
to bring some relief to misery / Pour soulager la misère
But many a passing stranger / Mais plus d'un étranger
dipped his hand / Mit la main au passage
in the village priest's hole / Dans l'trou du curé du village

He finally died one day / Mais un jour il mourut
surrendered his soul to God / Au Seigneur il rendit son âme
and since he lived a good life / Comme il avait fort bien vécu
he died as a saint / Il mourut comme un saint homme
and all women and girls / Et les femmes et les filles
came on a pilgrimage / Vinrent en pèlerinage
