This broach was carved by CharlesVolrath of Chalk River Ontario about 1946 for Mr W J Labow of Pembroke Ontario from the limb of a black walnut tree that had been blown off a tree in Mr Labow's yard on Maple Ave. in Pembroke. It was given to My Labow's niece who carried it with her on a working trip around the world through New Zealand, Australia, France and England before returning to Canada and eventually settling in North Carolina. In 2006 it was returned to Chalk River and given to a grand-daughter of Mr Volrath.

This plaque carved by Mr Charles Volrath of Chalk River Ontario during the time the Ontario Hydro Electric dam was being constructed at nearby Rapid Des Joachins P.Q. (1946 - 1951) is believed to portray Mr Volrath's interpretation of energy (horsepower) emerging from the waters of the Ottawa River. Attempts to translate the inscription have as yet been unsuccessful.
