Henry Eric Rath was killed on active service on 20 April 1942 and a memorial service was held in the church on 23 April 1942. On October 20th 1943, the Bishop dedicated an altar in memory of Henry Eric Rath . Also dedicated at the same service was a Roll of Honour, gift of St. Stephen's A.Y.P.A. (Anglican Young Peoples Association) and two Fair Linens, a gift of the Guild of St. Stephen,s Church and the Guild of St. Patrick,s Church. The alter was carved by Abe Paterson of Pembroke and donated by Mr. And Mrs. Samual Rath and family and Mrs. Lillian Rath ( Harry,s wife) .

The description of the alter is taken from the bulletin of October 20, 1943.

Left Panel;
Upper left corner - A winged man. This represents Our Lord,s incarnation, which is what St. Mathew emphasis in his gospel.
Upper Right Corner - A winged Lion . This represents Our Lord as King, which is the aspect of His life that St. Mark emphasizes.
Center - Chalice surmounted with a large priest's wafer and surrounded by 10 cherubs in clouds. The cherubs are worshiping Our Lord, who is present under the forms of Bread and Wine after the prayer of consecration has been said. The lines radiating from the Chalice and Host indicates that He is there present.

Center Panel;
Across the top of the panel there is a Vine of Grapes which represents both Our Lord and His Church. In the centre is the Lamb of God mentioned in Rev: V: 6 and in the book of the Seven Seals. This brings to our minds the words "Christ Our Passover is sacrificed for us"

Right Panel;
Upper left corner - A winged heifer. This represents Our Lord as Sacrifice and Priest which is St. Lukes presentation of Our Lord's life.
Upper right corner - A winged eagle. This is the symbol of the Gospel of St. John, he tells us of Our Blessed Lord's perpetual presence through the Holy Spirit.
Center - Our Lord's death as shown by St.John xix:25 with His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Beloved Disciple St. John (on the right)

These all form one whole Our Lord who is the Lamb of God and whose is the Book of Life is the True Vine of whom the Scriptures speak. The Scriptures are shown by the four symbolic figures taken from the Revelations of St. John. By His saving Death on the Cross He brings us the gift of Everlasting Life which he receives through the Most Holy Sacrament of His Holy Blood.

We are most thankful that Almighty God has led a family in the Parish to present such a beautiful gift for use in God's Church and in loving memory of a beautiful life given to us. The family were Mr. & Mrs. Samual Rath and family and Mrs. Lillian Rath (Harry's wife).
