Laura Holmes - Soprano

Laura Holmes was born in 1902 in High River, Northwest Territories. She was one of nine children in the pioneer Holmes family. She was musically gifted and had both voice and piano lessons. She moved to Calgary to further her education. She performed in recitals in Calgary and High River and gave voice lessons. Ms. Holmes spent her retirement years in High River where she sang in the St. Benedict's Anglican church choir. She was named "Pioneer Daughter of the Year" in 1980 and passed away at the age of 94.

Keith Hitchner and the Be-Bops

Keith Hitchner from Longview, Alberta and the Be-Bops, who were mostly Calgary musicians, performed all over Western Canada in the late 1950s. Their first major gig was at the Cominco arena in Trail, British Columbia. They performed on the Calgary television dance show "Jeans and Jims" and played nearly evey week at the Okotoks Elks Hall.

The Be-Bops included: Glenn Grice, drums; Bruce Strachan, keyboards; Gary Ghast, guitar; Henry Hart, bass; Doug Hollembeck, guitar, vocals. The Be-Bops broke up in early 1960's and afterwards Keith Hitchner went on to have a very successful professional career in Canadian music.
