The Blowes Family arrived in Stratford March 31, 1949 to purchase Mr. Kenner's Business at 40 Wellington Street. (Now J.S. News.)
They moved to the present locations at 32-38 Wellington Street. They rented these premises from Loblaws. In 1956, when Loblaws decided to move to Ontario Street he Blowes purchased the buildings. This building was originally a hotel in the late 1800's owned by the Brandenburg Family. The Brandenburg family also had a travelling road show and were one of the first to perform in the Avon Theatre.
The Stratford Shakespearean Festival's first box office in 1953 was located in the bookstore. This space was donated by the Blowes Family.
During their time in Stratford (53 years) all of the Blowes have been very involved in the community. Our mother and father showed us how to be good citizens and all four of their children have carried on in their footsteps.
"Thank mom and dad for your good example."
By sponsoring this room we wish to show the citizens of Stratford how much we appreciate the continued patronage and loyalty over the many years

Stratford Shakespearean Festival Foundation

Campaign for Funds

Here's what the festival will mean to you:

(1) It will advertise the city, as it has already done, over the whole North American continent as well as England;

(2) With a conservative estimate of 30,000 people coming into the city, it will mean an extra income of at least $150,000 to our merchants and citizens;

(3) As well as ourselves, it will give our children and our children's children, an opportunity to see some of the best theatre in the world;

(4) It will completely reverse the usual trend in Stratford's summer. Instead of everybody leaving the city, everybody will be coming in.

Here's what we are asking of Stratford's Citizens:

(1) To contribute towards this project, so that every citizen can feel a part of it;

(2) To advertise it by word of mouth and by letter.

Your contribution will pay larger dividends as well as being an investment in your community and nation

Send your donation, large or small, to
W.H. Kalbfleisch, Treasurer, Bank of Montreal, Stratford

Donations are Income Tax Exempt
