Those serving in uniform received regular correspondence from the Transcona Town Council and at least once per week, Council printed excerpts from letters in the Transcona Times, the local newspaper published out of the office on Bond Street at Melrose.

While several service clubs encouraged the volunteer efforts of women, organizations developed to provide support to the soldiers themselves including The Great War Veterans Association and the Returned Soldiers Association of Transcona.

The Town Council granted permission to The Great War Veterans Association to hold a sacred concert in the bandstand at Town Park in June 1918 and provided aid to soldiers' dependents to help them through the winter. In November 1918, Council distributed 50 bushels of potatoes, which had been grown by Transcona residents on nearby vacant lots to soldiers' dependents through the winter season of 1918 to 1919. Council also granted $300 to the Returned Soldiers' Association of Transcona to send Christmas Hampers to soldiers' dependents.

In Transcona the townspeople pulled together. The residents, businesses, and Council did their best to provide support for those who were serving abroad and the families that they left at home.

Between 1914 and 1918, over 400 men from Transcona enlisted in the army in service to King and Country. These brave men fought for the cause of freedom overseas in the trenches of Europe as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In many letters home, the Transcona men bearing the King's uniform in battle asked, "they always be remembered."

To date, seventy-six men from Transcona are known to have given their lives in service to King and Country. They paid the ultimate price in service to King and Country. Seven Transcona men were taken as Prisoners of War. The local newspaper, the Transcona Times told the stories of brave, heroic deeds on the battlefield as well as the sorrow felt by the families, friends, and acquaintances that were left behind.
