"We lived 3 1/2 miles from the school and in the winter when the weather wasn't so bad we would take a toboggan pulled by one horse and I was usually the driver as I was the oldest. If Jerry [younger brother] wasn't real good and didn't do what we told him, we would make him sit in the front so the horse kicked snow in his face as she walked along."

"I used to ride horseback to school and one summer day my brother needed the horse at home. When I got to school I sent the horse home. She didn't get very far when one of the neighbours caught her and brought her back to the school. I explained the situation to him and sent the horse on her way again, only to have her brought back by another neighbour. The poor confused horse finally got home and everyone got on with their day."

"In summer we always went in a two-wheeled cart. Dad thought two wheels was much safer than a buggy because there was no way we could jam the front wheels by turning too short and tipping it. Oh yes, a sheaf had to be put in every day for the horse to eat at noon. All this was after you helped with milking and morning chores and then, at night, getting in wood for the house and back to helping with chores again."
