"Some time about grade two I used to hear the big boys mention 'the strap" being kept in the teacher's desk. Being young and innocent and a bit stupid, I had to see this prize. One day during recess the opportunity presented itself by the teacher being out playing ball. I made the excuse of needing a drink of water; it was then I had the chance to see THE STRAP! I opened the drawer and there it was in all its glory - two inches wide, a foot and a half long, and a quarter inch thick. I had seen it and was satisfied that was all that was needed."

The temptation was there. The liquid ink situation often led to long hair changing color. Even as careful as they tried to be, students often went home with extra blue spots on their clothing. If they sat too far from the heater in winter time they probably had to wait for their ink well to thaw before they could do pen and ink work.
