In the midst of tragic incidents and narrow escapes, heroism played its part. Men, with complete disregard for their personal safety, plunged into the roaring waters, desperate attempts to rescue helpless women and children who were trapped in threatened houses. Daredevil bravery was responsible for saving many lives. One feature of the event, and I fear my readers may not accept this as logical, is I am convinced to this day that the water was warm. Whether this feeling was the result of physical shock, I cannot tell. With a friend, I waded waist high in the water in an attempt to rescue an old woman trapped in a house surrounded by water. It was then that I experienced the strange feeling that the water was warm.
