Beluga oil produced in Rivière-Ouelle always enjoyed a good reputation, particularly the oil sold in Charles-Hilaire Têtu's general store, which was said to be unrivalled. The Têtu store sold large quantities of it to Québec city tanneries for curing hides. Because it burned slowly, this oil was also used in street lamps. The premium oil was also used for cooking certain foods.

Têtu, a born inventor, found a way to purify the oil. He also discovered a technique for tanning beluga leather. He had his invention patented and presented it at the world expositions in London (1851) and in Paris (1855), where he received honourable mention and a medal.

Sir James MacPherson Lemoine and the priest Henri-Raymond Casgrain also put Rivière-Ouelle and beluga fishing on the map. Casgrain, considered one of the fathers of Quebec literature, published stories, including "La Jongleuse" (1861), which is tied to the beluga fishing ground. In addition, in his memoirs, he described in detail the pods of belugas coming right up to the shore at Rivière-Ouelle and the techniques used to catch, kill and process these marine mammals to produce oil and leather.
