Fort Point has a varied past from being settled as a place where the first fishing captain to arrive in the harbour each season would be named the Admiral and would be given the area now known as Fort Point (then named, Admiral's Point) to set up their fishing premises and to be closer to the prime fishing grounds. It later became a fortification (built in 1746 and destroyed in 1762); a lighthouse station (the first being built in 1871 and subsequent ones in 1922, 1980 and 2003) and today a tourism attraction.The story that unfolds here is that of the archaeology work that has taken place at Fort Point, the photos and excerpts from the report are dated to 1969, when the first work of this nature was completed at the site.
Following the archaeology that was completed on the land some photos and text are provided regarding the underwater archaeology that was completed in 1977 - 1978 on a shipwreck near Fort Point.

In 1967 signage was erected at the Fort Point site to indicate to visitors the location(s) of the various military structures that made up the former military fortification. These markers were put in place after research was completed over the years by members of the Trinity Historical Society and others and from studying maps and plans for Fort Point.8
