Different eras of railroad operations called for different jobs. Ernie shares how patrol men would regulate water flow to keep the snow sheds moist. The Bear Creek snow sheds contributed to a network of structures over Rogers Pass in the years before the Connaught Tunnel. During the winter snow sheds offered the line protection from avalanches. In the summer the snow sheds faced the challenge of high temperatures and sparks. Imagine your job, over a hundred years ago, keeping wooden structures moist in the vast landscape of Glacier National Park.
