Cook cars and cabooses were refuges when out on the track or being part of a train crew, referred to as the running trades. Ed remembers the highlight of engineering staff being fed by the cook cars when attending the site of a derailment. Can you imagine the effort required to clean up after a derailment?

When you think of Canadian Pacific (CP) positions often the running trades (conductors, enginemen, firemen, trainmen, carmen and brakemen) come to mind. Many more behind the scene jobs keep the railroad operating from the maintenance of way workers, bridge and building crews, signal maintainers and office staff. Today, Rail Traffic Controllers (RTC) carry out the tasks that back in the day were the duties of telegraph operators and dispatchers. Listen as Ken speaks of the telegraph operators and his relationship with CP.
