William H. Whiteley was one of the region most famous settlers. He came to the Lower North Shore in 1847, at the age of thirteen. He worked as a printers apprentice for the "Traveller Newspaper" in Boston. In 1858, Whiteley travelled to England to claim the estate of a great uncle. The estate consisted of five cottages and eleven parcels of land. While in London, Whiteley was also in search of a bride. He was staying with a distant relative, by the name of Mrs Thompson. She had a daughter about the same age as Whiteley. Louisa Ann Thompson, a school teacher, dated William Henry. While Whiteley was seeking his inheritance, he was also seeking Louisa Ann Thompson's hand in marriage. He was successful, and they were married on February 9, 1859, in London. A family story circulates that Whiteley promised to build his bride the finest house on the coast, however it was a decade later before he filled his promise.
