In the mid 1800's, Whiteley got the idea of making a cod trap, with which invention, his name is still connected. The idea came from the use of catching cod fish with a seine. Charles Carpenter, in 1856, (a visiting minister to the coast during the summer season), described to Whiteley how the seine would be pulled to make a bag of fish and then be moured, (boats were able to anchor on either side of the bag), draw it up, fasten the ends to the boats and pich fork out the cod. In 1871, Whiteley fished the cod trap with great success. He captured more cod and employed more men. Whiteley had twelve trap berths surrounding the shores of Bonne Esperance Island. In 1871, Whiteley reported the first use of the cod trap, he and six men caught, dressed, and dried 1080 quintles.
