A Shared River

Cascapedia St Jules

The Grand Cascapedia shares a heritage with many people who influenced its direction and management. People like Princess Louise, the Governors General of Canada, Dun, Davis, Mershon the Bonbrights and Phipps's family all played a part in preserving the Grand Cascapedia. Today men like Hoagy B. Carmichael, with his book The Grand Cascapedia - A History and Ron Swanson's book The Cascapedia Giants as well as Peter Corbin's art, including such titles as A Cascapedia Morning, pay tribute to the heritage of this river. They and so many like them will continue to make their way to the river each year in the hope of not only catching a big one, but to also share a unique experience on one of the truly great salmon fishing rivers in the world. Their love and concern for the Cascapedia will enable future generations of anglers to continue to enjoy the privilege of casting their line over the beautiful waters of the Grand. They too will become part of the flow of time on the river, like so many before them.

The Princess' interest in the sport of fly fishing was considered daring for women at that time in history and would have been unthinkable if she had been living under her mother's roof in England.

While on the river, the couple rose early every morning at dawn, paddled upstream to one of the deep, still pools of water that marked the river's course and fished from their canoes. They caught far more than they could eat themselves, and distributed the surplus to the local notables in New Richmond. They also sent carefully packed boxes back to Ottawa and even to her mother at Windsor Castle in England. The salmon were described as having reached their destination as "cold, pink and perfect".
We are catching very fine salmon", Lorne informed Lord Granville in England. "The river is lovely almost beyond belief and were it not that the Princess is not feeling strong, and that the flies are odious, our happiness would be perfect".
