In 1848 Charles Lanman left Washington D.C for an extensive fishing trip to Eastern Canada. He was a well known naturalist and wildlife artist. He described the "Gascapediak" as a charming river. He said that it promised to be, if not ruined by poachers, one of the best streams on the continent for fishing.

The natural beauty of the Grand is one of the attractions of the river. Its begins its journey from its sources high in the Shick Shock Mountains and continues along its 139 kilometre (87 mile) voyage down river to empty into the Bay of Chaleurs.
