Baie Verte Miners Museum - Introduction

The Baie Verte Peninsula just out from the northwest shore of Newfoundland. It is caressed on the east by Notre Dame Bay, on the west by White Bay and on the North by the Atlantic Ocean. Three primary resources have shaped the history and activity of the area, the forest of the land, the fish of the sea, and the mineral in the rock.

While fishing was practically the sole industry in Newfoundland for over 400 years, the history of the Baie Verte Peninsula has been inextricably wound around mining operations of one sort or another since the mid 1800's.

These mining operations as given this peninsula the right to boast about several "First" for our provience.
1st. Mine-motif Stamp.
1st. Smelter for the province.
1st. Gold mine.
1st. Gold brick.
1st. Railway
1st. & Only Asbestos Mine

Tilt Cove Mine, Rambler Mines, Advocate/Baie Verte Mines, Goldenville Mine, and Nugget Pond Mine are just a few mining operation that shaped the way we live here on the Baie Verte Peninsula.

In this exhibit you'll find several storylines about these mining operations that was carried out on the Baie Verte peninsula. Hope you enjoy.
