Goldenville Mine, located near Ming's Bight, was the first gold mine in Newfoundland. In 1903, J.R. Stewart started development of the mine. In 1904, a sample shipment was sent to Brookfield, Nova Scotia that produced an 11-ounce gold brick. This was the first gold brick made from Newfoundland gold. More shafts were sunk and a total of 158 ounces of gold was mined and milled at the local plant until the end of much potential for the Baie Verte area, but more study has to be done in order for a profitable mine to be established.
