In the spring of 1893 the Dominion of Canada bought the Morrison Farm, previously known as Kelties Farm, to be used for military training and other military purposes.

The site consisted of 344 acres situated just east of the present Town of Sussex,

The brigade camp of that year was filled with formal parades and the brigade review was done by the Minister of Finance for Canada, Hon George Foster, and the Lt. Governor of New Brunswick, Sir Leonard Tilley. Attending the camp that year were two infantry battalions, 67th and the 71st, the 8th Hussars, and two batteries of artillery from Newcastle and Woodstock.

To demonstrate how difficult the financial situation had been, this was the first year since 1881 that the 8th Hussars could all come to a summer camp to train as a single unit.
