"The hours of the work affect it a great deal in that, I'm not home a lot. You miss special occasions, family gatherings and I have two children and they've been affected just because I haven't been able to get them to certain activities."

"Being a police officer affected my home like is obvious because I have four boys and I guess I'm strict with them because I don't want to see them on the opposite side of the law. So I don't let them get away with things some parents might let their kids get away with. It's harder for them but you're a police officer 24 hours a day, you get calls at home from friends, friends of friends for legal questions. That is your job as well as your lifestyle."

Over the years, events were organized during the year that would involve the officers, their spouses and children.

Picnics

A picnic would be held annually for the children and spouses of police officers, by the police association. Typically, the picnic was held at Richard Lake in Sudbury. It was a great opportunity for the children to meet one another and have fun. They would have races, games and would swim. The adults would prepare the food and play games such as horseshoes.

"This is a picture dated August the 14th, 1959. It's in regards to our annual picnic at Richard Lake. Our police association always held an annual picnic for our children. Constable Roger Barkhouse is the police officer and he's with a small child, a member of one of the police officers and he's giving the little girl ice cream to eat. In fact, I even think that this is Roger Barkhouse's youngest daughter, Heather."
