This was told to me many times by my mother when it came near my birthday.

On August 25th, 1929, there was a bush fire at Atton's Lake. A general ring was put through on the telephone-(one long ring on the old party line) that there was a fire and all available men were asked to come help.

As it was a very hot, dry day my mother decided that she would go along for the ride. There were my two older sisters, 8 and 4, and my only brother who was 2. My Aunt Fanny Smith (Mum's sister) was there also. They all loaded into the old Model T, Dad driving, Aunt Fanny and the two girls in the back ( no seat belts in those days) and Mum in the front seat holding my brother.

Mum said "What a terrible day", she had my brother sitting on her knee kicking on the outside, me kicking on the inside.

She was really glad to get home because I kicked my way out in the Cut Knife Red Cross Hospital on the morning of August 26th. With Dr. Banting as her doctor.

She never told me about the results of the fire.
