The Campbells made maple syrup on their farm, in a fairly traditional fashion. The trees were tapped each year with a gasoline-powered drill, spiles were tapped into place with a hammer, then the sap pails were hung. Gathering the sap was done by hand, and brought to a tank on a wagon, drawn by a small Case dozer.Sap was then emptied into a holding tank, where it gravity-fed into the boiling pan, determined by a float valve. The boiler pan had a series of troughs, so that the sap was evenly heated. In the open front pan, the sap could be carefully watched in the critical final boiling stage.
