The first school in Digby was held in the homes of the pioneers. A tutor travelled from one to another every day. He left the town shortly thereafter and continued teaching in a number of different County locations. Later a different teacher operated a school out of his front room in Digby. A proper school was built in 1789. It served local needs until 1864 when an Academy took over. The present, now closed, Digby Academy opened in 1890, the third of four such institutions. St. Patrick's School was built for the adherents of the Roman Catholic Church. The Digby Regional High School and Digby Elementary have taken over the roles of the Academy and St. Patrick's.

This building was known as the Digby Academy. It was the third of four such institutions in Digby. Among earlier sites for the school were First Avenue, near where the Town Hall stands today, and on Church Street where McBride Park is located. Built in 1890 for eight thousand dollars, the building once boasted a tower with a bell, but the tower was removed when a new front was added. This school became Digby Elementary School until it was closed because of deterioration. On top of the hill, on King Street, stands the Digby Regional High School, the first rural high school in Nova Scotia.
