Selling the Banner and buying the Rouleau

A year later, an opportunity came to sell The Elgin Banner ... Following the sale, I began to look for a new location. The call of the west was in the air, stimulated by the vast immigration which was pouring thousands of families into the new provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta.

New towns were advertising openings for newspapers. Some owners were wanting to sell their businesses. There was movement and action everywhere.

Finally, after much travelling and personal enquiry, what appeared to be the best location was finally selected. It was in Rouleau, Saskatchewan where The Rouleau Enterprise was owned by a company of local businessmen.

The Enterprise plant was a tidy little one located in the basement of a brick block, a location that had one drawback. Every time there was a rain the water would run down the entrance steps into the basement and flood the floor, at times to a depth of two inches. The town of Rouleau was setting the pace in public ownership of utilities. ... The town had drilled two wells and found an ample supply of water at 200 feet depth. An electric light plant, a pumping station and water mains were installed in a suitable building to make Rouleau one of the most modern towns for many miles around. Though housing was a premium, the scales were tipped slightly in favor of the new newspaperman and so we were able to buy a house that had just been completed. It was a two and a half storey structure of architectural lines greatly admired at the time, but which would be shunned today. ... It was in this house that Mabel and I lived for thirty-four years during which time our five children were born to add to our happiness, which was further enhanced by the gracious atmosphere of friendliness and neighborliness so consistent with the spirit of the pioneers.
