Meeting His Wife

Any newcomer to the village who attended church was quickly assessed on two points - could he or she sing, follow a tune or sing a part with some degree of accuracy. On passing this unannounced test an invitation to join that particular church's choir would be immediately extended.
At the first practice I attended of the choir of the church I belonged to, I was attracted by a slender, vivacious young woman, with sparking eyes and a face that revealed a keen personality. She was a teacher on the local school staff.
Three years later Mabel Stirling and I were married to begin fifty-seven years of happiness together - years that were enriched by her unselfishness, her understanding, her sense of humor, her good judgement, and her loyalty to family tradition - a wonderful woman, wife and mother. "People, farmers especially, would want the newspaper to read, and didn't have any money because they didn't get much money from their crops, so they would bring in butter, eggs, flour, part of pig, rump or pork, and we had very good meals when this stuff came in, but we were quite content with the peanut butter sandwich."
