Circus

A circus in those days travelled on its own special train and would arrive in each town at an early hour in the morning. Its parade was always held before the noon hour and was a free attraction which drew into town the rural people from miles around.(Excerpt from Paper, Pen and Ink by Andrew King, Pg 38 - 39)

Sleek prancing horses in teams of two, four and six pulled the gilded chariots, band wagons, wild animal cages with a variety of critters from monkeys to hippopotami. There were acrobatic floats and, of course, a noisy, wheezy steam calliope, now rarely seen outside a museum or a private collection of antiques.(Excerpt from Paper, Pen and Ink by Andrew King, Pg 38 - 39)

The noon band concert usually sponsored by theatrical groups, was quite naturally less exciting than the circus parade, but then "everyone loves a band" and in those days bands were not plentiful on the prairies. A smartly turned out band with a drum major, laying stirring march tunes at quickstep tempo caused hearts to beat faster and immediate cares to disappear. The echoes of some of these great tune still remain in the memories of those whose lifetime extends back far enough. (Excerpt from Paper, Pen and Ink by Andrew King, Pg 38 - 39)

. . . All this variety of entertainment brought a bit of the brightness of the far-away land of make-believe to young and old alike in the isolated towns of the west, and was doubly welcomed by staffs of all weekly newspaper offices. It was the privilege of the press to be given complimentary tickets of admission in abundance. (Excerpt from Paper, Pen and Ink by Andrew King, Pg 38 - 39)
