Recovering and Rebuilding

After decades of troubles with the K'uch'an, Yukon First Nations people began the long process of recovering and rebuilding. Since the 1950s, First Nations' efforts have been foccussed in two main areas: regaining the power of self-government that was taken away, and restoring the cultural link that was broken by the residential school system.

The difficulty of these efforts is monumental. Recovering self-government has involved decades of political organization and struggle. Implementing self-governement will take many more years of the same.

Restoring the cultural link between generations has meant starting from the ground up, helping people re-learn their culture and language that was banned at residential schools. Today, people don't have the luxury of living in one distinct culture. They must learn to walk in two worlds at once: the world of the Hudé Hudän and traditional law, and the modern world of permanent communities, self-government, and complicated technologies.
