EPA had its beginnings in 1949, with bush flying as a mainstay for the first few years. Soon, a very early form of MediVac service began, along with cargo carrying capabilities.

More modern aircraft appeared during the 1950s, such as the passenger-converted Canso PBY-5A, the Douglas DC-3, and the thoroughly modern Dart Herald. All were well suited to the short hops between Newfoundland and Labrador communities. Later, the Boeing 737 proved popular, and enable comfortable flights to Labrador and other Atlantic Canada destinations.
