When the Western Union's first office proved inadequate, a new two-story building was erected on Court Street in December of 1914, at a cost of $80,000.

The building is situated one kilometre from the town's main street. At the time, modern compact equipment installed at the North Sydney cable office had an estimated value of over one million dollars. The machinery in this building was kept in top working order.

There were nine cables operating from the North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Western Union Cable Office. Over these cables a total of 30,000 messages a day were received and relayed to and from the farthest points of the universe. So even though Western Union had approximately 25,000 stations scattered across the globe, its North Sydney office was considered one of its most important and busiest.
