The spreading of the the Quakers was part of a movement westward from the eastern seaboard that was changing the population of a continent. It led to many men and women of Quaker heritage leaving their economic stamp on the land in Ontario.

When Timothy Rogers (a Quaker) undertook to bring 40 families to Yonge Street (a newly opened trail in Ontario,Upper Canada) in 1801, he knew that Quakers were skilled in pioneering in their home state of Pennsylvania. They had established a number of meetings in Pennsylvania and they were running out of land to pioneer.

The York aboriginal trails used by the first settlers to travel into the interior of Ontario. The Don (Yonge St.) trail was followed by Timothy Rogers to lay claim to land around what later would become Newmarket.
