Wooler School #2976

Joe Bell homesteaded NE-17-36-5-W6 in 1908 and donated four acres of land on the southwest corner of his property for school use. Joe Bell named this school "Wooler" for the Wooler District in England where he had lived.
In 1913 meetings began on this project and logs were hauled to Dan McGrandle's mill and sawed into lumber. Oliver Thibedeau and his son, Bill, did the construction and by the spring of 1914 the building was complete. Melville Ferguson was the first secretary and held this post until 1951, when the school closed and the children were bussed to Caroline.
Since the school registers were lost, it is impossible to name the first teacher, but Chester Dahms was the last. He taught from April to June, 1951 when the school was closed. In 1953 the school was moved to Caroline to the West side of the school property to be used for overflow classes. In 1956 it was sold and moved to the West end of the Village and became the St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
The seventh school built in the Caroline Alberta District.
