James River School #3920

The first school in the James River area was at Lobley - a community south of the James River. This school burned down in 1918 and classes were held in the home of teacher, Mrs.MacDowell. The James River school was built in 1921 on the north side of the river. C.B. Shantz was the first teacher and taught until 1923. The school closed in 1956 with the pupils being bussed to Crammond. Mrs. Jean Severns was the last teacher when the school was closed. The James River School still stands in the original site along Highway 22 at the James River intersection.Remembering all the fun things that were held in these old one-room schools are indeed special memories.
James River school was the eleventh country school built in the Caroline Alberta District.
